Dr. M. Shahid Ilyas Dhami, kit no. 217/Latif House joined Cadet College Petaro in 1961 in 11th Class and left the college in 1963 after completing his Intermediate.

Dr. Dhami is currently the Project Director / Vice Chancellor of the new Baqai University being set up on Super Highway between Karachi and Hyderabad.

After leaving Petaro, Shahid Ilyas Dhami moved to Dhaka from where he completed his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Biochemistry in 1970, as an inter-wing scholar from West Pakistan. He then moved to the USA, and joined the USA Marines. He fought in the Vietnam War as well.

After the war, he was back in the academic circles, and completed his Diplomate of Industrial Toxicology from Wayne State University, Detroit, MI in 1977. He then moved to Canada and in 1982 he completed his Diplomate of Occupational Health and Safety from McMaster University, Canada. Subsequently, he completed his Ph.D. in Biochemical Toxicology from University of Surrey in the UK in 1985 (as a Commonwealth Scholar from Canada).

Alongside pursuing his educational ambitions, he was also employed in various academic institutions throughout. He was a Research Associate at the Banting Institute, University of Toronto from 1970 to 1986. During the latter years at this Institute (1980-86), he became the Institute Director of Research and Administration.

He then moved to California and was Professor / Director of Basic Sciences at San Jose State University from 1986-1996. Concurrently, he was the President, Board of Directors of Nuclear Sciences Institute at San Jose State University. In 1996, he was given the rank of Professor Emeritus at the same university.

In 1999, Dr. Dhami moved to Islamabad, Pakistan and was appointed Science Advisor at the Pakistan Academy of Sciences. During this period, he also taught Biochemistry at the Shifa College of Medicine, Islamabad.

He finally moved to Dhaka, Bangladesh in 2002 and was appointed the Vice Chancellor of the State University of Bangladesh.

Dr. Dhami has been the recipient of several awards. He was the Inter-Wing Scholar from West Pakistan to East Pakistan in 1964-1970. He was the Commonwealth Scholar from Canada in 1982-85. He was given the Scientific Researcher of the Year Award from ICA, USA in 1990. He was given the Presidential Award for Research at Palmer-West College, San Jose, California in 1988 and the Presidential Award for Teaching from the same college in 1990. He also obtained the Stuart Alan Hoffman prize for excellence in Pathological Chemistry in Canada in 1980.

Dr. Dhami has been honoured many times by being given very important positions as well. He has been the Vice President of Human Rights Commission of Canada (appointed by Prime Minister Trudeau), Chairman, Board of Directors, SeaMart Inc., San Jose, California, Vice Chair, Asian Pacific American Faculty and Staff Association, San Jose State University, Secretary and Founding Member, American-Ukraine Scientific Association, Inc., President, Nuclear Science Board, San Jose State University, California, Chair, Advisory Board, Neighborhood Health Administrative Services, Inc., California, President and Founding Member of the Board of Directors, Pan Asian Community Housing Development, Inc., San Jose, California, Director, Advisory Board, California Healthcare Corporation, Inc., Palo Alto, California, adn Chairman of Citizens Watch Committee for Industrial Emissions and Chemical Waste, Junction Triangle Area, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

He is fluent in English, Urdu, Punjabi, and Bengali languages and has a working knowledge of French.
